The summer can be a great time to wheel out the car, give it a good wash and even a thorough detailing job. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when washing and detailing your vehicle in the hot summer heat that, if you forget, can lead to more grief than glee. As such, we’ve put together some tips and tricks for the next time you want to wash and detail your car in the summer.

Pick a Good Time of Day to Do It
Unless you have a shady area to do so in, washing and detailing your car in the afternoon sun can be a recipe for disaster. Instead, plan to make it a morning or evening task so you can avoid the peak heat times, and make sure to wear sunscreen and a hat as needed. If you have a carport or shady place to wash and detail your car, the better, but it never hurts to be safe and plan around the hottest time of day so you can get everything done without worrying about overheating in the process.
Check the Temperature of Your Ride First
It might seem like a no-brainer, but your car should be cool to the touch before you do any washing or detailing work on it. Soap and cleaning materials can dry and damage the exterior paint if the car’s too hot. If possible, simply wait until it’s cool before working on it, but if not, give it a cool-down spray to make certain it’s not too warm before getting to work on it. If you’re planning to detail your car you’ll want to wash it off first to get rid of any dirt particles before applying the waxing or sealant anyway, so just make sure the water you’re using is nice and cool.
Use the Best Materials You Can
Look for heat-resistant waxes and sealants for your detailing work, and use microfibre towels when drying and buffing the surface. Even if you’re just washing your car, make sure you’re using a soap that won’t damage the exterior paint and instead will clean your car the best.
